Тигр, некогда обитавший на просторах Центральной Азии, ныне бесследно исчез. Воспоминания о нем сохранились лишь в народном фольклоре и исторических документах. Материалы исследования: записки путешественников, отчеты государственных и военных чиновников, содержат исключительные сведения, относительно обитания в здешних краях крупного хищника – тигра. Материалы, а в основе своей это данные российских исследователей, дают широкую палитру сведений и имеют особую ценность на фоне того факта, что хищник этот, к большому сожалению, исчез из реестра дикой фауны Туркменистана. Сохранилось множество представлений и суеверий, связанных с фигурой тигра. Животное это было символом власти, силы и могущества. Его образ прочно осел в народной памяти и занимает достаточное место в культуре туркменского народа.
