Крепости составляют неотъемлемую часть общественной, хозяйственной и политической жизни туркмен. Эффективную защиту от неприятеля и обзор окрестностей давали угловые башни. Небольшие укрепления возводились без башен или имели ее за пределами стен. Изолированные башни носили название – динг. Строились динги и на приусадебных участках, а также на хлебных полях.
Археологические работы в этом направлении были выполнены еще в середине XX века. Однако в дальнейшем исследование памятников XVIII-XIX вв., за единичным исключением, можно сказать не велось. Мы в свою очередь попытались взглянуть на эту проблему более обширно и внести свой вклад в освещении данного вопроса. Сведения о дингах, часто встречаются в источниках XIX века. Изучение документов, записок и отчетов российских чиновников и военных инженеров, дает возможность создать общую картину рассматриваемой темы. Сопоставление археологического и источниковедческого материала и их анализ позволят классифицировать типы и виды башен. Правильная оценка полученного результата, поможет указать на их функционирование в военное время и бытовое назначение в обычной бытовой жизни общества.
